Nonboring Nonfiction: Engaging Young Readers with Hands-On Activities
Book talks are great, but interactive learning makes topics come alive -- especially for young readers. Participants in this session will learn how baking with crickets or mealworms can lead to discussions of history, world culture, sustainability, and alternative food sources; how dissecting an owl pellet can answer questions about ecosystems and food webs; or how watching videos of birds flying can lead to brainstorming about the ways in which biomimicry can (and has) influenced design. This lightning talk will inspire library staff to look for new and creative ways to pair fun, education, hands-on activities to pair with new STEM- and STEAM-related books. In-house and outreach programs will be discussed, all focused on helping young readers understand that nonfiction is anything but boring.

These moments can stand alone as a single positive interaction for patrons of all ages or act as a catalyst to the development of long-term networks throughout the community.
