How do we get there from here?  Budgeting advice from library directors.

Libraries are an important part of all communities, but like many services, they are currently struggling with ever-tightening budgets. As organizations and jurisdictions look for places to cut spending, library systems are often among the first to feel the pinch even though they offer unique and important resources to their communities.  In this session three successful library directors (two public and one academic) will provide tips on creative budgeting and long term forecasting to address limited resources, with much of the session devoted to participants’ questions.
Jaema Berman, Addison Township Library; Richard Schneider, Muskegon Area District Library; Carol Zeile, Alma College

The Future of Libraries

Looking outward – at the changes, trends, and opportunities happening in the larger world –is an essential part of any leader’s job. It’s also an essential part of futuring, something that ALA is focusing on through its new Center for the Future of Libraries. The challenge for all of us is to integrate insights from those external trends into our current operations and ongoing innovations.  This session will highlight some of the work of the Center, including its approach to futuring and the trend resources it has developed. Thinking through how this work can be leveraged with staff, we will explore how consumer trends can help develop a sense of urgency for change, how trends lead to innovation, and how staff can be empowered as trend-spotters and innovators from wherever they are in an organization.
Miguel Figueroa, Center for the Future of Libraries, American Library Association

Executive Exchange

As information managers, every day we face new challenges.  In an industry full of curveballs, some of these issues can be worked through with ease while others cause stress and setbacks before reaching a resolution.  Life is inevitable and not all the tools of the trade can be learned in the classroom or in a textbook.

During this quick paced session, participants will have an opportunity to present a challenging situation to a colleague and then brainstorm solutions to some of the more common struggles associated with being a leader in the information industry.
