2019 Literary Awards Top Titles

The 2019 Mitten, YouPer and Thumbs Up! award selection group members worked throughout the year spending thousands of hours reading, reviewing and ranking hundreds of books to establish their lists of the top titles published in 2018. We look forward to revealing the winners and honor books this October at the MLA 2019 Annual Conference in Novi!

House Passes Library Protection for Narcan Use
On a 106 to 0 vote the Michigan House of Representatives passed HB 4366 and 4367 which would provide liability protection for libraries when providing the life-saving opioid antidote naloxone, common brand name Narcan, to an overdosing patron. The bills are now headed for the Senate.

MLA 2019-2020 Board of Directors Election
MLA will hold elections for the Board of Directors April 8 - April 22. This year MLA members will vote for an MLA President-elect and four member-at-large board positions. These positions will serve for a three-year term beginning July 2019 and ending June 2022.

We just changed our clocks; spring is coming (it really is); and the Michigan Library Association staff and leadership are changing.

The Librarian Mission
Recently, I had the opportunity to address a group of librarians about my experiences over the past six years as your executive director. I mentioned the outstanding grassroots advocacy shown by members. I always said this group answered a call to action more passionately than any I have known. We have teamed up to accomplish legislative initiatives such as tax capture relief, freedom of speech issues and every type of library funding imaginable.
