MLA Connect Coffee Hour: Michigan’s Redistricting Commission

Thursday, July 22, 2021
10:00 – 11:00 am

MLA is excited to welcome Edward Woods III, the Communications and Outreach Director for the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to July's MLA Connect Coffee Hour. Edward will describe the redistricting process, answer questions about the commission, and describe how your library and community can be involved.  Learn more by visiting the MICRC website at https://www.michigan.gov/micrc/.

In November 2018, Michigan voters amended the Constitution with the "Voters Not Politicians" ballot proposal, a constitutional amendment to establish a commission of citizens with exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress every 10 years. Now, the Michigan constitution empowers an independent commission of citizens to draw district lines for the Michigan Legislature and Michigan's members of Congress for the 2022 election and beyond.

The new redistricting process ensures that redistricting occurs in an open and transparent manner with an opportunity for statewide public participation. Libraries can play an important role by helping to keep communities informed of the process or volunteer to host a town hall forum on the process.
