President's Update - August 11, 2016

At the Howell Library we've begun a new strategic planning process. Our facilitator has challenged us to define our own highest purpose as an individual as well as the highest purpose of the library. This is no easy task. However, when we can state our highest purpose with a vision, the planning strategies will fall into place rather easily.

One of the books I recently read, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth, defines purpose this way; the intention to contribute to the well-being of others . Purpose is deeper than intention and /or goals. It is like a calling.

One of my favorite quotes is from a simple truths book that I keep on my desk. It’s by Mac Anderson and Tom Feltenstein titled. “Change is good…You go first.” It talks about change being a gift that we should embrace. Our MLA Annual Conference workgroup has taken that pursuit to heart and they have some interesting and innovative new events for MLA 2016.

Since we’re celebrating a milestone anniversary, 125 years of service to libraries and library professionals, there is nothing like a party to honor the past and look toward the future. Thursday night’s reception will surprise you with clever and just plain fun ideas. Browse through exhibits, poster previews and our life size history timeline.  You can get your picture taken in a photo booth and enjoy music from the decades while enjoying some great food.

Our Push for Relief from Tax Capture Continues this Fall

A little over a year ago MLA sent out a survey asking member librarians to tell us how tax capture entities were impacting your library budgets. We heard from you. Some of you told us you were losing up to 50 percent of your library budget to tax captures. Others noted dozens of tax captures in your library district. It was reported a number of the tax captures had been in existence for decades with no signs of ending.

President's Update - July 14, 2016

As the 2016-17 MLA President, I look forward to learning new skills and working with the dedicated volunteers and staff. It is an honor to be part of such a powerful team in this influential organization. I have worked in libraries and have been active in professional library organizations for many years, but it is truly a privilege to serve in this distinguished role.

Congratulations Carla Hayden

By now most librarians have heard the great news that the Senate on Wednesday confirmed Carla D. Hayden to serve as the first African-American and the first woman to lead the Library of Congress.

Hayden, who now leads Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library, will serve a 10-year term. The confirmation vote was 74-18. Like many state library associations, MLA board of directors issued a letter first to President Obama in support of Dr. Hayden and later offered full support for her confirmation by Congress. Thank you to all who joined us in contacting lawmakers on behalf of Dr. Hayden.

President's Update - June 9, 2016

I’ve been thinking a lot about gratitude lately. Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Academic Library Development Network (ALADN) conference in Boston. The speakers repeatedly emphasized the need to say thank you and to say it often.

We were reminded of Penelope Burk’s research, which shows that donors who are thanked by phone within 48 hours are more likely to be repeat donors and more likely to increase their donations. Donors appreciate prompt contact that expresses gratitude and explains the impact of the donor’s investment.

President's Update - May 12, 2016

I recently had the honor of being part of Michigan’s delegation to National Library Legislative Day. This was my first time participating and I expect it won’t be my last. Representing Michigan libraries on Capitol Hill was rewarding on both personal and professional levels. I learned several things that are worth sharing.
