Libraries are crucial to our communities and even the smallest fac ets of our operations can have a lasting effect on our patrons. As we look at the world around us and think about our part in it, are there ways we ca n make changes that will ripple outward? We know that librarianship is over whelmingly homogeneous and often lack experience in talking about race and other “difficult” topics. Many of us want to see libraries be more diverse but wonder how we can make a difference when as individuals we are part of the majority.
In this workshop, we will look at how libraries and lib rary workers can reassess our systems to identify the ways in which these s ystems have often upheld racist, colonialist, patriarchal, heteronormative, ableist, and classist values. These systems have evolved over time but, li ke our larger society, still contain many problems that actively hurt indiv iduals in our communities. How can we change these systems to make them les s oppressive?
