Navigating Data Capture and Use in Academic Libraries

Abigail Goben Head ShotAcademic libraries face growing opportunities and challenges regarding the amount and types of data they capture; the privacy and ethical responsibilities surrounding that data; and a desire to make data-driven decisions to improve services and best support their campus communities. Join Abigail Goben during the morning workshop where participants will tackle these issues and debate if and how academic libraries can use data responsibly and develop strategies to engage with students, faculty and administration on the future of library-generated data.

Abigail Goben, MLS, is an Associate Professor and Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences. She teaches data management and evidence based practice, and serves as the liaison to the College of Dentistry. Her primary research focuses on policies and education surrounding research data. Goben is also a co-investigator of the IMLS funded Data Doubles project, which is examining student perceptions of library learning analytics. Goben is an active member of LITA and ACRL. Outside of library and research work, Goben is an avid knitter. She blogs at Hedgehog Librarian and can be found on Twitter as @hedgielib.

12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Lunch (provided)

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
In this two part presentation Dr. Felix Kabo will discuss The Library Learning Analytics Project (LLAP), a collaborative study by 17 institutions led by the University of Michigan, on how libraries impact learning. The project team is working to discover best practices to provide guidance to libraries on how to best design and implement empirical, holistic library learning analytics (LLA) studies on the links from library usage, to learning outcomes such as research, course instruction, and publications. In part-two, attendees will take part in an interactive learning analytics scenario that explores the implications of personalized data analytics on patron privacy and the ethics of using and storing patron data. "Academic Library of Tomorrow: Learning Analytics Scenario" will challenge attendees to explore the benefits and potential drawbacks of using big data and data science to offer personalized services. Participants will discuss:

  • What aspects of the library of tomorrow scenario excited you?
  • Did any of the scenario seem "creepy?"
  • Why does the ALA place such a high value on patron privacy?
  • Is the learning library concept at odds with ALA statements regarding patron privacy?
  • Should patron data be more widely shared with organizations that support library services? Which ones? Under what conditions?
  • Who owns patron data, the library or the patron?
  • What sort of choice or agency should patrons have over how their data is collected, used, or shared?
  • Should libraries seek more patron input into library learning analytics? What some ways for doing so?

Dr. Felix Kabo is research faculty at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) and is also affiliated with the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI). He has expertise in network science, statistical modeling, and in using small, large, and “Big” data for research and evaluation.
