MLA Connect: How Do You Do, Fellow Kids?: Interacting with Reluctant Teens at the Library

May 21, 2026
1:00 - 2:00 PM

Every Youth Services Librarian knows the anxiety of how to best connect with the teenagers at the library. How do you engage with them when it feels like they speak a different language? But here’s the secret: teenagers are actually just awkward weirdos. They’re people who are looking for a space they feel is theirs and can let their guard down. The best way to let them show their authentic selves is to be your authentic self. You’re not their friend, or their teacher, it doesn’t matter if they think you’re cool—you’re their librarian. Join Paris and Lindsey for a lively hour of digging into what that means by being authentically uncool and turning embarrassment into engagement.

The library was the first place a teenage Lindsey was looked at with suspicion. She never forgot the feeling of being watched and questioned for looking at a shelf of books. This experience motivated Lindsey’s desire to let teens know they are welcome at the library. No matter her role in a library, Lindsey has made teen services a priority. Her ability to be authentically uncool is a talent that has won over teens from Zeeland to Canton to Dearborn. A theater kid at heart, Paris has a unique blend of experience in both libraries and the performing arts and believes very deeply in the power of being silly. He can make a room full of toddlers roll over with giggles and a room full of teens roll their eyes with embarrassment. Paris has worked in Youth Services in some form since 2015, with experience serving diverse groups of young people across Minnesota, Hawaii, and Michigan.
