Volunteer and Engagement Opportunities with your Michigan Library Association

Looking for ways to further your career, get up on the latest trends, enhance your network, create professional relationships, or give back to your library community? We encourage you to explore the many avenues available to connect with your MLA and your colleagues.

Volunteering can help you achieve your personal and professional goals. The Call for Volunteers is held each spring and this is the time to get involved with work groups and committees.

Who is Eligible?

All MLA members are eligible to participate and volunteer on a committee or work group. Nonmembers interested in volunteering are welcome to join the association online or by calling (517) 394-2774.

Why should I volunteer?

Volunteering will help you take charge of your career and broaden your knowledge. You can gain access to current events in your career area or take advantage of a safe space to learn about other areas while you have a chance to enhance your leadership skills. It’s also a great way to just have some fun while meeting new people.

Where do I fit in?

There are many ways to join in from micro volunteering opportunities such as writing articles, participating in social media or volunteering for a day or a few hours at Annual Conference, to work group, committee, or board service. Volunteer to present a program or poster at the Annual Conference, Spring Institute or Academic Libraries events. There are also mentoring opportunities and online interest group participation.

How much time will I need to invest?

There are opportunities for any amount of participation. A few hours to a number of meetings per year, some with additional outside activities.

How do I apply?

The Call for Volunteers is open to members in the spring. The volunteer year term for committees and work groups runs July 1-June 30. Watch for communications about ad hoc volunteer opportunities throughout the year. For any member who wants to get involved with MLA, we have a place!

MLA Opportunities for Involvement

Board of Directors

The MLA Board of Directors is elected by the membership to serve three-year terms. Members vote annually on candidates that have been identified by the Nominating Committee. The board includes a President, President Elect, Past President, Treasurer, and 10 Members at Large. The MLA Executive Director and the State Librarian are ex office members.

Standing Committees

Legislative committee

Monitors legislative policy issues impacting libraries and males policy recommendations to the board. Informs and educates members about state legislation and policy issues. Contacts legislators as needed to educate them about library concerns. Works closely with the MLA executive director.

Professional Development and Networking Committee (PDNC)

Anticipates emerging trends and hot topics. Works with staff as a think thank for ideas and insight to help identify the kinds of training our members will need to excel in the libraries of the future as well as today. Members must have prior experience on an MLA work group to participate on this committee.

Work Groups

Work groups are task-oriented, project-based opportunities that focus on a specific outcome and are closely aligned with volunteer skill sets and interests.

Interest groups

MLA Interest Groups are informal communities proposed by and maintained by current members who have a common goal. Interest Groups give members the chance to build something to meet shared needs of library professionals in Michigan. By participating in an Interest Group, members can explore networking opportunities with colleagues and engage with others to discuss problems and find solutions, keep current on trending topics, and share resources and materials with colleagues.

Special Committees

The board of directors may develop special committees to serve a specific purpose in a designated timeframe. The board will identify members based on the task and need.

Communications and Membership Micro Volunteer Opportunities

Adds value to MLA communications though member driven content and provides opportunities to engage with members and the library community.

MLA Annual Conference Onsite Volunteer

The MLA Annual Conference is a big event that takes many hands to bring together. Onsite volunteers help at the registration desk, in the MLA booth, as technology assistants, in education sessions and at special events.

Additional Micro Volunteer Opportunities

Outside of the formal programs presented in the Call for Volunteers, numerous micro volunteer opportunities exist that you can take advantage of at any time. Contacting your legislator in response to an MLA Action Alert, casting a vote in the board of director’s election or responding to a member survey are just a few examples of how your involvement on any level impacts the work of the organization.
